Who uses it
- Billing companies cleaning claim files before submission, so a deactivated or mistyped NPI doesn't come back as a denial weeks later.
- Pharmacies checking prescriber NPIs on a batch of scripts.
- Credentialing and staffing teams confirming a roster is active and the taxonomy and license state are right.
- Data teams filling in missing names, specialties and addresses.
What each row is checked for
- Format and check digit, so typos are flagged without a lookup.
- The CMS deactivated NPI list, with the deactivation date.
- The live NPPES record: name, type, taxonomy, license and address.

Questions
What file formats work?
CSV, TXT or anything you can copy. We read every 10-digit number in the file, so the NPI can be in any column. For Excel, select the NPI column, copy it and paste it into the box, or save the sheet as CSV.
What columns do I get back?
NPI, check digit valid, status (Active, Deactivated or Not found), deactivation date, entity type, name, credential, primary taxonomy code and description, license number and state, practice address, city, state, ZIP, phone, enumeration date and last updated date.
How long does it take?
Around a minute per 1,000 NPIs. The page shows progress, and you can keep working in another tab.
Is my file uploaded?
For the free check, only the NPIs are sent, a few at a time, and nothing is stored. For a paid check we store the list of NPIs so the results survive the payment step, and you can download them again for 30 days. Don't include patient data. We only read NPIs.
How current is the data?
Active records come from the live NPPES API at the time you run the check. Deactivations come from the CMS report dated Nov 02 2026.
