How to find your NPI number

Search your first and last name below. Add your state if your name is common.

The quickest way

  1. Type your first and last name in the search box above, the way it appears on your license.
  2. Open the filters and pick the state where you practice.
  3. Find your name in the list. The specialty and city help you tell people with the same name apart.
  4. Open your record and copy the 10-digit number.

If you changed your name, search the name you used when you applied. NPPES keeps the name you filed until you update it.

Other places your NPI is written down

  • Your NPPES account. Sign in to NPPES and open your application. The NPI is at the top.
  • The confirmation email or letter CMS sent when the NPI was issued.
  • Your employer or billing office. If a hospital or group applied for you, their credentialing team will have it.
  • Old claims or remittances, where it appears as the rendering or billing provider NPI.

If you can't find yourself

You may not have an NPI yet, or it may have been deactivated. Students and residents often assume their school applied for them when it did not. Search again with only your last name and state. If nothing comes up, read how to get an NPI number. It is free and takes about 20 minutes online.

Questions

Can I have more than one NPI?
A person gets one NPI for life. If you also own a practice set up as a corporation or LLC, the business can get its own organization NPI (NPI-2). A sole proprietor uses their individual NPI.
Does my NPI change if I move states?
No. The NPI stays the same wherever you work. You just need to update the practice address in NPPES within 30 days.
What is my NPI number if I am a nurse?
Registered nurses are not required to have an NPI unless they bill or prescribe, but many apply anyway. Nurse practitioners almost always have one. Search your name above to check.
